In the “Hot Pepper, Air Conditioner, and the Farewell Speech” (2009), chelfitsch had pursued in the naturalism, in order to illustrate the daily lives. In this dance work, they had put a focus on the movements of people, using them in an enlarged way. In the “We Are the Undamaged Others” (2010), their method was pushed forward into the next level. Dimensions of time and space became more abstract in this new theater production, and they showed an example that a production can only be completed with the audience’s imagination.
What will chelfitsch present to us in 2011? Please keep an eye on their endeavors.

A monologue. Mia, a girl around the age of 20, is waiting for her friend Hiroko by the window seat at a Starbucks Coffee near Yokohama station. Hiroko talks about her elder boyfriend, Kadota. Kadota offered Hiroko marijuana when they were in a hotel one day, and Hiroko was shocked. They hadnﾕt met for a while since. Hiroko is concerning if she continues her relationship with Kadota or not. Listening to her story, Mia watches a guy from the window, doing his part-time job of handing out brochures of cosmetics. The actor now starts to play the role of the guy. The actor complains as the guy. Because heﾕs doing the job absent-mindedly, he hands the brochure to a tall guy by mistake and gets cursed by him. The tall guy was Kadota. Kadota walks to Hiroko in Starbucks with horrible expression on his face. The title comes from Chekhov’s monologue “On The Harmful Effects of Tobacco”.

The groundbreaking and modern work of chelfitsch Theater Company has made it one of Japan's most talked-about theater companies in recent years. Characterized by deceptively insubstantial narrative, super-colloquial dialogue, and exaggerated fidgeting-turned-choreography, the work perfectly captures the irony and impotence felt by the Generation Y in Japan today. The work overcomes language barriers, garnering the company wide acclaim in premier theater festivals and venues throughout Europe and Asia, including Brussels, Paris, Cardiff, Salzburg, and Singapore.
Five Days in March is the prestigious Kishida Kunio Drama Award-winning play by Toshiki Okada. In the days before the U.S. declares war on Iraq in March 2003, two Japanese urban hipsters meet at a rock concert and are swept into a one-night stand that turns into five days of continuous sex. Oblivious to the imminent invasion, the slackers obsess over the details of their love affair. The piece unfolds as actors slip in and out of character while casually narrating and playing out scenes. This work takes the Japanese “quiet theater” movement [the naturalistic and analytic theatre that forms the cornerstone of contemporary Japanese theater of the 1990s] to another level with remarkable choreography that is completely disconnected from the content of the hyper-real conversational tone of the dialogue.

Highly acclaimed work, which was primarily made to take part in "We Love Dance Festival '04" (Kyoto Art Complex 1928 and Shinjuku Park Tower Hall), but turned out to make for the finals at "Toyota Choreography Award 2005" (Setagaya Public Theatre). Created by Toshiki Okada, who was then working mainly in the field of drama, "Air-Conditioner" is a piece of work made through examining dance approaches by pursuing the connection between "body" and "words"; the factors that compose staging. The clearly defined concept of the body demonstrated in the work defied the conventional idea of “choreography”, generating an enthusiastic debate among the audience.
Below is the excerpt; throughout the play, a conversation is made about the temperature setting of an air-conditioner.

F: About the air-conditioner…
M: Yes.
F: It’s a little bit cold you know, maybe too cold... in our office the temperature's always set at 23 degrees and even in strongest power, which I think is crazy if you ask me.
M: Yeah...
M: 'Cause the air-conditioner is really... you know, it's always set at 23 degrees in the strongest wind, and I think this is quite unusual, yeah I do think so... like, itﾕs almost funny, but I guess I myself is kinda person who is cold-natured, you know...
M: Ah, it may be hard for women I think, yes, it may be kinda hard for women.
F: Yeah, no, is it like "you're kinda person who is 'kinda cold-natured'" or I mean, for like women, but is that how you feel or...
M: Yeah.
F: What do you mean by that? But is it like "yeah, I guess I'm aware of that" kinda feeling? I don't know I guess, but...
M: Yeah, I know many women are like that, I feel sorry you know.
F: But yeah, I think thatﾕs the reason, I myself think so anyway.
M: Yeah, I know many women are like that, I feel sorry you know.

Set in a newly developed residential area for families called Kohoku New Town, the story revolves around a young couple. When their community holds a special campaign to find foster parents for abandoned pets, the couple take a fancy to a cute cat. After much consideration, they decide against adopting the cat in the end, for they have just found out that the wife is pregnant. The play sheds light on the mixed feelings of joy and fear that the husband and the wife each experience. The pregnant wife wonders who has taken the cat under his/her wing.
This was the first work to be produced after Okada won the Kishida award.

One early summer morning. A woman is sitting at a table in a family restaurant. She spends half an hour, which she considers as her "free time," here almost every morning before going to work. She always has a notebook open in front of her in which she has been seen to write something. Sometimes, she is heard to mumble to herself. One of the waitresses has had a chance to peep into the woman’s notebook.

The woman spends much of her time in the restaurant on recollecting the past or on having fantasies, or so the waitress supposes. The woman cannot get rid of a sinister suspicion that her “free time” may have been provided all along by what has actually been appropriating her time. If it is true that her “free time” is only a convenient tool which has ultimately been serving to constrain her freedom, what should she do?

“Air Conditioner” (30-minute version) stylishly and idiosyncratically represents a seemingly mundane conversation between two co-workers. Earlier critics compared the performance to dance because of the actors’ peculiar movement. As if to corroborate their interpretation, Okada participated in "Toyota Choreography Award 2005: Discover the Choreographer for Next Generation" with this piece, making it to the finals. Thus taking the contemporary dance scene by storm, Okada and his drama company eloquently articulated　a unique concept of the body that defied the conventional idea of "choreography."

In 2009, “Air Conditioner” was reproduced as a 70-minute piece titled “Hot Pepper, Air Conditioner, and the Farewell Speech,” and was premiered at Hebbel Am Ufer, Berlin. This updated and expanded version was highly acclaimed as one of Toshiki Okada’s masterpieces, drawing attention from numerous drama/performance art festival directors throughout Europe. Newspapers and magazines in Berlin praised the piece, saying that it “showed the possibility of performing arts that approaches the morbid core of the society,” and that it is “an exceptional dance piece.” Check out this outstanding new piece by chelfitsch, a globally acclaimed theatre company.

Moving one step beyond the company's signature style, the use of so-called "hyper-colloquial Japanese and noisy corporeality," chelfitsch has continued to explore a new frontier of theatre. The latest piece is an outcome of the company's tireless endeavor to radically question and creatively update the foundational modes of modern dramatic representation.

The story takes place on August 29th and 30th, 2009, on the second day of which a general election for the lower house seats was held in Japan. Blurring the boundaries between action and narration, the direct and indirect discourse, the performers take turns representing the vague anxiety of a wealthy couple, who are about to buy an condominium in a newly built high-rise. By teasing out the barely visible realities of class divide in today's Japan, the play interrogates the contemporary meaning of "happiness." The script makes a fairly minimal use of simple language while the performers reject a facile recourse to conventionalized bodily representation.
